Ben Campbell’s book is where I first read of Gabriel’s conspiracy. The book is an excellent, sweeping coverage of Richmond Virginia’s history, especially as it pertains to interracial relations over the centuries. I found the court transcripts, personal correspondence and newspaper articles provided in Schwartz’s book to be a wonderful source detailing the conspiracy and the Virginia of 1800. At the Library of Virginia, I was able to sort through and hold many of the original court documents and correspondence pertaining to the conspiracy, including receipts for payments to executioners and slave-owners. The Eggerton, Nicholls, and Sidbury books were some of my earliest reads on the subject and provided different in-depth perspectives on the conspiracy. The other web pages, articles, and books were all very helpful to me as I attempted to understand the context of the conspiracy and the historical and lasting impact of race-based slavery in the United States.
